1. Get Out of Your Comfort Zone
The problem with life being too comfortable is that when a little friction develops, we become incapable of handling it well. It is good to routinely push yourself outside of your comfort zone in all sorts of ways. Whether it is trying a new and different workout, reading a classic you feel like everyone else read in college, or taking up a new hobby, the process of challenging yourself translates to other areas of your life. Maybe you will live a more fun life, but even if not, you are rewiring your brain to accept discomfort a little more easily.
2. Invest in Education
It is never too late to go back to school. Whether you are looking to advance your career or simply test your mind, college is for all ages. Student loans make college an option to be able to finance your education within reach for nearly everyone. Smart planning ensures that your investment will pay rewards by qualifying you for a higher salary or even by allowing you to switch industries. Best of all, there is no time limit on the process. You don’t need to quit your job and become a full-time student to reap the benefits of continuing your education. You also don’t need to be planning a major career change to justify taking college courses. Whether you are fresh out of high school or haven’t seen the inside of a classroom for decades, expanding your mind through formal education provides countless mental and emotional benefits.
3. Give Back to Others
Volunteering in your community is a great way to grow as an individual. Charitable organizations can always use your money, but they just as often need you personally. Working with others opens your mind and eyes to differences in situations all around you. The best part of all is that you are sure to find an organization that interests you. Regardless of the age group you want to work with, or even if you would prefer to work with animals, no matter your existing skillset, and how much or how little free time you can offer, there is a volunteer organization close by that would love your help.
4. Give Yourself a Break
Self-improvement is a noble goal and will make you a better person, but it is important to give yourself a break as well. Sometimes you need to relax your standards and take an evening off. Just as the rest period is important for muscle development when you work out, resting your mind allows your hard work to solidify and gives you a renewed vigor when you return to your self-improvement tasks.
